The Invention of the Interstate Highway

Interstate Highway, hmm... I guess in some ways it's a good thing, but it is also a bad thing. I kind of think it's a waste because so much money is being put into this, we don't know for sure how well this will work out in the end so why put soo much time, money, and effort into something that could fail so easily. But the upside to this is that traveling would be so much easier. Though I don't own a car or anything, it just makes going from point a to point b more efficient. Trade will also be a definate upside to this. Anything that would need to be sent somewhere will no longer have to be pulled by animals up and down the erie canal for example. It will be much more efficient and effective. Who knows though, maybe this will be revoluionary.

The World's Fair

Finally, the World's Fair. I'm anxious to go see what this is all about. I've heard a few things but I still don't have a real idea on how it'll be. The biggest thing that everyone seems to be talking about is the time capsule. That took me by surprised. I wonder what would be put into it. Maybe when it gets opened up in however long, someone will see the type of world that we lived in. It can give them some guidence of what our lives were like. There could be a chance that they still have some of the same things that we do. I wonder how they'll react when someone opens it in the future. This could be a new tradition that people will want to start. Kind of like a generational thing. each generation has one and they get passed down for years and years to come to see how much our lives are similar and different they are from eachother.

Protesting

So my father and his fellow workers weren't the only ones who went on strike. I heard about several other strikes, unlike the one my father took part in, the other strikes got a bit out of hand. Many strikes ended up with violence. I'm not sure if the ones striking were the ones who caused the violence or if it was the police not wanting the strike to go on any longer so they decided to put matters into their own hands. Either way I feel that the violence was too much. Those who were on strike did nothing wrong so for it to go that far was a bit drastic.

The Labor Union

My father, who only just recently found a new job, is now being jipped. He is part of a labor union and the manager is deciding to cut his pay and his hours. Him and a few of the guys that he works with are planning out to strike. They aren't sure exactly what they are gonna do yet but they are hoping that it doesn't escalate to something more serious. They just want a fair pay, it's not asking for much. Who knows, maybe they'll come around and see that cutting their pay is unreasonable.

Model-T

So there's a new car that everyone seems to be talking about. It's called the Model-T. They're pretty nice if you ask me. I've only seen about two so far. They were both black and of course it was the rich people who have them. None the less, the car itself was made by Henry Ford. He made them all the same with something called the assebly line. What a smart idea because it seems to have definately paid off for him. I wonder what will come next.

Andrew Carnegie Stell Plant

Andrew Carnegie created a steel plant. It`s both a good and a bad thing. My father, sister, nor I can work there because we aren`t white or males. It`s good though because more buisinesses and building will be built in rural areas like where I live which will definately benefit my family and I. This will hopefully get us better jobs and start getting our lives back on track.

Scientific Management Theories

The Scientific Theories seem like a good idea. New ways to work while maximizing profits at the benefit of the workers. Seems to me that would work well. Hopefully my work will do that because some places are following the Scientific Management Theories but to a disadvantage to their workers by working them more but keeping the pay rates the same. They won`t be too happy about. This in general seems to be a beneficial method for the simple fact that there will be so much profits being made within the industries.

The Completion of the Erie Canal

The Erie Canal is finaly finished. It`s kind of a cool thing if you ask me. It makes moving things up and down stream a whole lot easier as well. And it definately makes it a lot faster. It may have taken quite a bit of time to make but it seems like it`s going to be worth it in the end. They`ll make a whole lot of money off of it so that everyone can travel much easier.

The Telegraph

The other day while I was at work, I heard that the telegraph had been invented. It`s genious. To be able to communicate such long distances is very benificial. Though it can`t be used for my own personal use, it helps with knowing about all the political and economic news. It`ll be a lot easier to deal with everything on with the business I work and and all the trading that we do with other businesses.

About Me

My name is Brynn and I`m living in the hinterlands. I live with my father. I`m not sure what happend to my mother besides the fact that she took my sister and went off somewhere in search of a place to live. I`m 19 years old and I`m living with my father. We are sort of livining from day to day at this point since I`m not able to work and he is only a union laboror. I`m trying to find a job but for right now it is not going so well.
